"What's the best piece of business advice you've received?"

That was a great question from one of my Ag Business Coaching clients.

It made me stop and really think about her question.

My answer: You are the sum of the people you surround yourself with.

My takeaway: Your friends and acquaintances can open or shut doors for you. Make sure you are putting yourself in rooms with people who will teach you, introduce you, or listen to what you have to say.

If you want to level up your agriculture business, find the people who want the same thing and learn from each other. But don't stop there. Keep finding the people who make you think more extensively than you ever thought you could.

Find the people who share your vision or broaden the horizon of your dreams.

Taking a minute to respond to this email that I’ve been getting lately:

I am so frustrated. I am about to get out of the cattle business. I sold some calves, got my check, and didn’t make any money. What should I do?

1️⃣ What is your profit and loss on what you sold? Did you really not make money, or did you just not make as much profit as you wanted?

2️⃣ Are you bringing what the Buyers want? Do you have a highly desirable animal? There’s an order for everything, but you need to ensure you get it in front of the right Buyer.

3️⃣ Are you selling at the right livestock auction barn, or is a livestock auction the right avenue of selling for your operation? Does your sale barn get highly qualified, assertive Buyers in their seats, or is their sale a little on the quiet side? In an auction barn, when you are the Seller, you want people to bid high for your animals. Having aggressive Buyers is even better. Are you bringing specialty-type animals that should be sold in a private treaty offer where you have better control over your price?

The start of a new month is the perfect time to set new goals, evaluate the progress on current goals, and have a renewed look at what's to come.

Here are the steps I follow every month:

1) Go back to your big picture. What are you trying to accomplish with your business?
2) Assess your three-year goals, one-year goals, and quarterly goals.
3) Set a five-minute timer and start assessing what you have accomplished vs where you want to be.
4) Write out this month's goals.
5) Break down your goals into steps
6) Set deadlines to keep yourself accountable and on track.
7) Add these deadlines to your calendar and schedule them.
8) Take action to accomplish these goals.
