"What's the best piece of business advice you've received?"

That was a great question from one of my Ag Business Coaching clients.

It made me stop and really think about her question.

My answer: You are the sum of the people you surround yourself with.

My takeaway: Your friends and acquaintances can open or shut doors for you. Make sure you are putting yourself in rooms with people who will teach you, introduce you, or listen to what you have to say.

If you want to level up your agriculture business, find the people who want the same thing and learn from each other. But don't stop there. Keep finding the people who make you think more extensively than you ever thought you could.

Find the people who share your vision or broaden the horizon of your dreams.

Taking a minute to respond to this email that I’ve been getting lately:

I am so frustrated. I am about to get out of the cattle business. I sold some calves, got my check, and didn’t make any money. What should I do?

1️⃣ What is your profit and loss on what you sold? Did you really not make money, or did you just not make as much profit as you wanted?

2️⃣ Are you bringing what the Buyers want? Do you have a highly desirable animal? There’s an order for everything, but you need to ensure you get it in front of the right Buyer.

3️⃣ Are you selling at the right livestock auction barn, or is a livestock auction the right avenue of selling for your operation? Does your sale barn get highly qualified, assertive Buyers in their seats, or is their sale a little on the quiet side? In an auction barn, when you are the Seller, you want people to bid high for your animals. Having aggressive Buyers is even better. Are you bringing specialty-type animals that should be sold in a private treaty offer where you have better control over your price?

The start of a new month is the perfect time to set new goals, evaluate the progress on current goals, and have a renewed look at what's to come.

Here are the steps I follow every month:

1) Go back to your big picture. What are you trying to accomplish with your business?
2) Assess your three-year goals, one-year goals, and quarterly goals.
3) Set a five-minute timer and start assessing what you have accomplished vs where you want to be.
4) Write out this month's goals.
5) Break down your goals into steps
6) Set deadlines to keep yourself accountable and on track.
7) Add these deadlines to your calendar and schedule them.
8) Take action to accomplish these goals.

When you sit down with your planner this weekend,

When you sit down with your planner this weekend, start looking for dates to work your cow/calf herd for the fall.

One of the veterinarians I use recommends scheduling this near Thanksgiving. For one, you'll have plenty of help on hand (lol), and it's easy to remember the dates of any vaccines you administer.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your Herd Work Day:

* Make sure you have ranching hands. This is not the time to bring in amateurs who think they know what they're doing. Hire real help if you need it.

* Plan to document your cattle data. Palpates, culls, production, and any notes that will be helpful for your decision-making when it comes to keeping or selling any animal.

* Know ahead of time what your cull criteria will be. Do not decide on a case-by-case basis. You are running a business. If an animal is not producing or costing too much, this is cutting into your profits. You are here to make money. Use the Cull List in the TxFRS Shop to help you.

* Make an appointment with your vet for medication advice and safe practices. If you plan to wean any animals, know the stress signs ahead of time to combat any weaning illnesses.

* Do you already know you have animals to sell? Make arrangements in your pens or your livestock auction to hold or haul your animals for you if needed. This may mean having feed and hay on hand until the next sale date.

* Ask for help. We all want to have successful herd practices, and if you are just getting started, ask for help. Let someone help you work your herd or decide what to keep or sell. Feeding animals that are not right for your program will ultimately cost you money.

As agriculture business owners, we're busy in daily operations.

Take a breath and a step back and let's do some reflecting on the week. This can be incredibly beneficial for both personal and professional growth.

Every week, set aside some time to reflect on what went well and what didn't. Celebrate small victories and learn from mistakes. Did you achieve your goals for the week? If not, why? What can you do differently next week to stay on track?

Reflecting on the week also allows you to assess your priorities and make adjustments as needed. Are you spending too much time on tasks that aren't contributing to your overall goals? Are there areas where you could delegate tasks to free up more time for important projects?

So, mark your calendar every week to take some time to reflect on your progress, challenges, and goals.

October is here, which means the final quarter of 2023 is here.

Save this post for later and refer back to it often.

There is a lot of work to do, but don't get overwhelmed.

1) Review and revise your quarterly goals.
2) Get caught up on your bookkeeping if you're not already.
3) Make an appointment with your CPA to ensure you are set up for the tax strategy you'll need going into 2024.
4) Get your calendar up to date.
5) Map out the days you will be away from your business and hire help as needed.
6) Mark your calendar for dates local sale barns will be closed so it doesn't hinder your sale plan.
7) Plan your feeding list ahead of time to avoid store closures.
8) Reflect on what you've accomplished this year.
9) Start drafting your 2024 goals.
10) Assess the skills or knowledge you need to obtain for your 2024 goals.
11) Compile a list of people you want to meet, learn from, or form relationships with.
12) Review your company goals and vision. Make sure your plans are aligned with your values.
13) Make a gratitude list of all the knowledge, skills, relationships, and mentors you have been blessed with.
